Cathie Clinton

This is intimate theatre, it is groundbreaking art, it is experimental performance. It is honest, unique and passionate, and these qualities resonate with its audience.  Truth and beauty is combined. The truth isn’t always glossy, or perfect, and neither are human beings, but it is what we do with our mistakes and experiences that makes the difference. These two women are revealing their secrets and they invite strangers to become part of their lives. That is beautiful.

Cathie Clinton (live) Jennifer Williams (film)

A tale of travel by two women in different continents. Beginning Melbourne Fringe Festival 26th Sept-9th Oct. Cathie Clinton ‘live’ and Jennifer Williams ‘on film’. Watch out as the performance changes and develops as it travels back to Wexford Fringe Festival 4th-6th Nov. and then on to Alabama to Rebecca Dove Dennard in 2012.

No matter where you go there you are.

Cathie Clinton Pic. John Allen

http://www.fundit.ie/project/no-matter-where-you-go-there-you-are

No matter where you go there you are, is an interactive interdisciplinary film and theatrical piece. A conversation between two women, one Australian, Jennifer Williams, now based in Ireland, and one Irish, Cathie Clinton, now based in Australia, the show will be performed at Melbourne Fringe Festival for two weeks (8PM 26th Sept-9thOct) and the Wexford Fringe Festival for 3 dates (3.30PM 4th, 5th, 6th Nov.) The show inMelbourne will be performed by our Irish actor, with video of our Australian actor’s performance inIreland projected into the space, and interacted with by the Irish actor. Written by the two performers, the show will draw on their experiences of the expectations and promise of travel, their subsequent lives in their new countries, and where they hope or expect it to lead to from here.

http://www.pozible.com/index.php/archive/index/1482/description/0/0

The honesty of its creators, the humour and drama entailed, and the brave venture into the unknown that this performance represents in every way, will wake you up, shake you up, make you laugh and cry, and challenge you to really look at your own life. This is about building your own future, not just waiting for it to happen, this is about inspiring others, not just searching for inspiration.

HERE IS A TASTE OF ‘NO MATTER WHERE YOU GO THERE YOU ARE’

So, I was having drinks with my friend Emma. She was back from New York for 6 months or so and was working at some impressive law firm in Sydney. She’s telling me about all the amazing things she’s been doing, her French boyfriend, her New York boyfriend, her UN boyfriend, the New York bars she’s been hanging out at, the museum and art galleries she visits, the UN people she’s been working with and I’m telling her how… I’m still inSydney. How every year, the students get younger. And cooler. More piercings. That my agent hates me for taking a job he considers beneath me, and is punishing me by not putting me up for any other work, meaning I’m working part-time as a ‘Customer Service Representative’ in a hideous high school tutoring business run by an incredibly intense and critical Korean man who watches me like a hawk. And, to top it all off, after a couple of disastrous, and frankly, embarrassing attempts at relationships over the past few months, I’ve started internet dating.

It gets to a point, I think probably after about my third glass of wine, when I put my head on my hands and cry out, ‘Why can’t I live overseas? Why can’t I do exciting things like you?’

Emma doesn’t do emotional. Emma doesn’t do self-pity. Emma doesn’t do drama. She says, ‘Well, you can, you know, Jen. Its not that hard, you just get yourself a visa and you go.’

She’s right. Of course she’s right. And I decided, then and there,

‘I’m going. Next year. I’m going.’

Wexford Setting

Melbourne Setting

The first few months every time I opened my mouth I would be greeted with “You’re Irish.”  When I replied in the affirmative I could see a wave of assumption flush down over the backs of the eyes. Some were even tactless enough to remark on how fucked my country is now. A small few would even go so far as to give me a cultural assessment, as to why we are such a pathetically messed up bunch. I enjoyed these little anthropological appraisals from the armchair sociologists, as much my tone deaf housemate plundering every song I happened to mention I liked, or even was heard to hum to myself. Of course the hidden cost of a job in retail is never, NEVER, telling the customer what you really think. I felt myself quietening and then worse, assimilating.

The otherness was crippling. I wanted to scream sometimes. ‘I GREW UP WITH CROCODILES ANDBUFFALOIN MY BACK YARD!! IN 40 DEGREE HEAT ALL YEAR ROUND! WITH A COCONUT TREE IN THE BACKYARD.’  My childhood memories are ofCoburgand the outback NT. I am not ‘Irish’, not the way you mean! I am not here with my cap in my hand. I am a god damn citizen, and I came here to study and to reconnect with a huge chunk of my childhood.

Jennifer Williams

I remember when I first read Jenny’s bio and I thought “Oh fucking great” of course she’s more experienced, more educated, I bet she’s beautiful and full of life, I bet she doesn’t miss a beat or travel half way across the world to hide in her caravan in a reclusive confused stupor, mulling over what to do-what to do-what-to-DO!!!!????? I bet she hasn’t the attention span of a butterfly procrastinating months away, getting side tracked with meaningless jobs and peripheral interests. Oh Look! She’s written loads of scripts! Jesus Fuck. She’s “proactive”, she makes “contacts”. I reexamined my inertia and amazing dodging of opportunity with an even more scathing scrutiny.

Cathie Clinton. Pic John Allen

My challenges were internal, self-generated. I obsessed over what was going on at home and poured over articles and links dissecting the dreadful state of affairs at home, often staying up ’til 4 and 5 am to chat online with folk inIreland. Revolution seemed to be in the air.

I realised, suddenly, that I was in a completely different situation in Ireland, than I had been in Australia, audiences were even harder to come by, and everyone in that circle knew it, and suddenly my own voice sounded naïve, full of arrogant optimism, that grating, foreign, lucky accent cutting through the conversation.

The Cart Room, Agricultural Museum, Wexford.
I was so nauseous for so long I began to be worried I might be pregnant. That was when it hit me that all the freedom, the possibility, the vast range of options could disappear if I were to suddenly have to raise a child & that is when I began to see what I was ignoring. The premise of working so much was to save money for university next year. Relocating and, having given away everything you own, arriving with just a bag of clothes and a violin, costs money.

I was panicking about what to do, reading up on abortion laws, recalling, terrified, a friend who had jokingly commented to me before I left that I shouldn’t get pregnant whilst I was over there, because abortion wasn’t legal in Ireland yet.

Make a short film during a festival from concept to screening.

This is not about proving that we can make a film, it is about making a film that will change your world, it is about accessing your deepest passions, your creative potential, and communicating it to an audience through film.

We source the core crew, cast and equipment in advance of the beginning date but remain open to new participants from the festival community, or the local community, until the day we commence. The principle idea is that we create the film ‘from scratch’ beginning on day one and work towards a finished edit for public viewing, at whatever time suits each festival programme.

The project began with Mutant Space Trash Culture Revue 5th-8th May and then Corona Fastnet Short Film Festival 26th-29th May, next on the agenda is Kinsale Arts Week 14th-17th July.
A further layer is added to the project in the making of a feature length documentary of the work involved, this is captured by a second crew, to be shown at the end of the entire project.

Basic format for the four days:
Day 1:
-Meet at the venue; the building will be significant to the work.
-Discussion and decision within the final production group on what our theme and story will involve. (Subsequently, after Trash Culture Revue this will also include viewing of the previous film in order to make a connection.)
-Workshopping of ideas in performance-crew participation expected and invited.

Day 2:
-Rehearsal of the final performance.
-Rehearsal of the shots necessary; to ensure that editing is as uncomplicated as possible- as few takes as can be arranged, will be arranged.

Day 3:
-Videography of the work.
-Editing begins.

Day 4:
-Editing is completed for  festival audience.
-8pm (or at time programmed by festival) Screening Event for Festival Audience.

Programming;

The screening event includes a short introduction by our ‘special guest’ and a presentation of the process by RSVP; followed by a presentation of the previous films in the project-currently ‘Elusive Memories’ created at Mutant Space Trash Culture Revue, running time 10mins, and ‘Dear Mum’ made at the Corona Fastnet Short Film Festival, running time 7.5 mins- and finish with a thirty minute discussion on the film and the process, inviting audience participation, to include a screening of the ‘first cut.’ Therefore a minimum of one hour slot.

This a  celebratory event, as it is the culmination of four days of intensive work by the core crew, and possibly the first film ever made by some of the participants.

Screening:
With regard the public viewing of the piece, where possible it will be presented in a film theatre, for Kinsale this means a high definition projector, sound system and screen in the working venue. This premier screening on day four is the ‘first cut’ and not the final edit, although it will be brought as near to a final edit as is possible for the enjoyment of the festival audience.

A copy of the ‘first cut’ will be kept for documentary purposes.

 Our Practise.
Our practise is to treat each event as a holistic experience where producers, performers and audience are of equal importance. The end result is a piece of art to be proud of, but it is not the paramount objective, the means by which we achieve this end is of equal importance. We harness the power of performance to generate teamwork, encourage innovative ideas and open awareness of self and our environment. We aim to provide all who work with us with a sense of accomplishment, within an enjoyable, harmonious and exciting environment. This company offers an opportunity to become part of a functional, flexible and inspiring team, and encourages mutual respect and camaraderie. Individual skills are respected and supported to the end that all are motivated to move to ever increasing levels of success. We provide a constantly evolving environment of increasing productivity within a secure framework of proven procedures.
Our goal is to create art.

Connections Crew.

In each festival RSVP (Red Sandstone Varied Productions) will make a short film, from start to finish, to co-incide with the festival. The public are invited to join the artists involved, no experience is necessary only a willingness to commit to the process. “Come and be part of the production team, or, if that is not for you, come and see the finished project and hear how it all came together.”

Each film is a unique creation for the festival, and part of a series called ‘Connections.’ The process will also be filmed by a second crew, to become a feature length documentary at the end of the project. Crew are also required for this part of the project. Core crew are interchangable according to availability, you can sign up for a day, or a festival, or all the festivals, that is up to you. Funding is being sought but currently the project is unfunded. Core crew are considerd to be- Camera/Editor/Actor/Producer/Public Relations/Composer/Writer/Sound/Lighting/Chef if these are your areas of skill, and you care to share, then please do.

Connections

Do you want to be a movie maker?

Come and learn how to make a short movie with RSVP. Or come and teach us how you do it. Film production is the name of this game.

The project begins May 5-8th at the Mutant Space Trash Culture Revue and moves forward to several other festivals in Ireland over the course of the next year.  So far on the ‘Connections’ agenda are Corona Fastnet Short Film Festival 26th-29th May and Kinsale Arts Week 14th-17th July.

Mutant Space Trash Culture Revue
RSVP (Red Sandstone Varied Productions) will make a short film, from start to finish, to co-incide with the festival, 5th-8th May. You are invited to join the artists involved, no experience necessary only a willingness to commit to the process. Come and be part of the production team, or, if that is not for you, come and see the finished project and hear how it all came together. The finished short film is a unique creation for the Mutant Space Trash Culture Revue, and the first in the series of ‘Connections.’

The process will also be filmed by a second crew, to become a feature length documentary at the end of the project. Crew are also required for this part of the project. Core crew are interchangeable according to availability, you can sign up for a day, or a festival, or all the festivals that is up to you. Funding is being sought but currently the project is unfunded. Core crew- Camera/Editor/Actor/Producer/Public Relations/Composer/Writer/Sound/Lighting if these are your areas of skill, and you care to share, then please do.

What is ‘Connections’?
Make a short film during a festival from concept to screening, and repeat this process at ten festivals in Ireland over the course of a year. The further layer to the work is the making of a feature length documentary of the process, following ’Connections’ through all ten festivals.

This is not about proving we can make a film, we know we can. This is about making a film that will change the world, it is about accessing your deepest passions, your creative potential, and communicating it to an audience through film. We want to connect to the greater community by offering the opportunity to be part of the art of film creation. All are welcome to participate, to learn, to teach, to inspire, to create. We source the core crew, cast and equipment in advance of the beginning date but remain open to new participants until the day we commence. The principle idea is that we create the film ‘from scratch’ beginning on day one and work towards a finished edit for public viewing, at whatever time suits each festival programme.

The project begins May 5th at Trash Culture Revue and moves forward to several other festivals in Ireland over the course of a a year. Basic format:

The Fairy Queen decides that Sinita needs to see what the real message of Christmas should be. She transports the audience and Sinita to Santa’s village, where they meet the cyber elf who is a superior elf (even if he does say so himself.) In the end Sinita helps Santa, Mrs. Claus, and the elves save Christmas from the Wicked Witch. She finally gets to go home when she learns her lesson.
